Moosend vs Mailchimp:
model your real limits.

The useful difference is not a longer feature list. It is whether your contacts, monthly sending volume, audiences and team fit the published limits before overages or upgrades enter the picture.

Quick verdictMailchimp has the clearer ongoing free route for a very small list. Moosend has the longer no-card trial and the simpler published sending proposition for regular, higher-frequency email. Teams with several separate audiences should compare Mailchimp's explicit audience limits with a Moosend or Moosend+ quote.

Evaluation with 251–1,000 contactsMoosend

The published 30-day trial covers this range, requires no card and includes unlimited trial sends.

Frequent monthly campaignsMoosend has the simpler limit

Pro advertises unlimited sends; Mailchimp publishes tiered monthly multipliers and possible overages.

Many separate audiences or usersMailchimp publishes clearer capacities

Premium states unlimited audiences and users. Compare the price with a Moosend+ quote for the exact team need.

Do not compare the headline price

Both vendors change the relevant price as your usage changes. For Moosend, enter the unique contact count and compare the live monthly, biannual and annual quote. For Mailchimp, select the same contact count, then include the plan needed for your sends, users and audiences. Promotional prices and introductory discounts are not a fair long-term comparison.

1.Use your expected 12-month contact count
2.Divide monthly sends by contacts
3.Add overages and required upgrades

Example: a 5,000-contact list sending four campaigns a month creates about 20,000 sends, or 4× contacts. That fits within Mailchimp's published Essentials multiplier, but plan-specific features and audience needs may still force a higher tier. The calculator above makes that constraint visible without inventing a price.

The free plan and trial are not equivalent

Mailchimp's Free plan is an ongoing, restricted workspace. It is useful when the list and sending volume are genuinely tiny. Moosend's 30-day trial is a time-limited evaluation with a larger contact allowance and unlimited trial sends. Choose the free plan when staying free matters; choose the trial when testing a realistic workflow matters.

Mailchimp currently advertises 14-day trials for Essentials and Standard, with valid payment information required under the published trial terms. Moosend says its 30-day trial requires no card. Recheck both offers at signup because trial eligibility and terms can change.

Sending limits can change the real price

Mailchimp publishes monthly email allowances as a multiple of contacts: 10× on Essentials, 12× on Standard and 15× on Premium. It states that overages apply when contact or send limits are exceeded. Moosend advertises unlimited email sends on Pro. “Unlimited” is still subject to the vendor's terms and acceptable-use rules, so confirm unusual or very high-volume workloads directly.

When Mailchimp is the better fit

  • You want an ongoing free option and can stay within all Free-plan limits.
  • You need several explicitly separated audiences and want published seat and role capacities.
  • Your required features map cleanly to a specific Mailchimp tier and the live total remains competitive.
  • You prefer its broader marketing ecosystem enough to accept plan and send-limit complexity.

When Moosend is the better fit

  • You want to test with up to 1,000 contacts for 30 days without entering a card.
  • You send frequently and want a Pro plan that advertises unlimited campaigns.
  • You use multiple lists or segments and value Moosend's statement that a unique address is billed once.
  • You want a focused email, automation, landing-page and form workflow rather than a broader marketing suite.

A safe migration test

  1. Export first. Keep contacts, consent evidence, suppressions, tags and unsubscribes.
  2. Authenticate the sending domain. Follow the vendor's current SPF, DKIM and DMARC instructions.
  3. Rebuild one revenue-critical automation. Check triggers, delays, branches and links.
  4. Send to a small permission-based segment. Inspect delivery, mobile rendering and tracking.
  5. Compare reports and exportability. Make sure the data answers your actual decisions before migrating the full list.

Moosend vs Mailchimp FAQ

Is Moosend or Mailchimp free?

Mailchimp has a basic Free plan for up to 250 contacts, with a maximum of 500 sends per month or 250 per day. Moosend offers a 30-day trial for up to 1,000 contacts instead of a permanent free plan.

Which is better for frequent sending?

Moosend publishes the simpler allowance: unlimited email sends on Pro. Mailchimp's base allowances are 10×, 12× or 15× contacts depending on plan, with overages possible.

Which is better for occasional sending?

Both have a credit route. Moosend says purchased email credits do not expire; Mailchimp positions Pay As You Go as an option for infrequent senders. Use the expected send volume to compare live costs.

Can I move later?

Yes, but migrations have real labor cost. Test contact fields, consent records, suppressions, templates, automations and domain authentication before cancelling the old account.

Best low-risk next step

Test the workflow, then price the same workload

If your evaluation list fits within 1,000 contacts, Moosend's 30-day no-card trial is a low-friction place to test one campaign and one automation. Then compare both vendors using the same projected contacts, sends, users and audiences.
